A Joyful Noise (1980) is a documentary about Sun Ra and his Arkestra. It features footage from live performances of, amongst others, the songs "Astro Black", "We Travel the Spaceways," and "Requiem for Trevor Johnson (Discipline 27)", dedicated to a former member of the group.
The movie was filmed by Robert Mugge between 1978 and 1980 in Philadelphia, Washington D.C. and Baltimore and it includes interviews, rehearsal footage, private performances, poetry readings and extensive improvisations. A Joyful Noise displays Sun Ra’s art of transformation and innovation, the dream of social and political progress and his spirituality expressed through artistic creation.
