The Report
Buenaventura is located in Colombia's southern Pacific Coast. One of the most important and active harbours of the country is located in this city that produces a very important income for the country. Because of the legacy of slave-trading during the colonial times, it’s population it’s mostly Afro-Colombian. Despite the wealthiness this city produces trough its harbour, Buenaventura's population suffers from poverty, most of its inhabitants lack basic services like water, health and education. Levels of corruption and violence are high. They live in the middle of a confrontation between different armed groups who are competing for controlling drug trafficking routes.
Despite all these problems, this town shines for its rich cultural and artistic expressions. They sing to everything and they dance to any sound they hear. For Buenaventura's communities, artistic expressions are very powerful tools for transforming social and economical problems, into songs, grooves, flows and beautiful moves.
